I love the people on my course so much. Everyone's so supportive and friendly and lovely. Today was sort of a rushy day and I didn't have time to either pack a lunch or buy one between classes. Upon quietly mentioning this once in my afternoon class (not moaning, honest, just saying) I was given an apple, a banana, a pack of hula hoops and a granola bar by my fellow students. They really are the sweetest people. We got to make puppets yesterday! Mine is a dinosaur named Fred. I am so deliriously happy to be studying occupational therapy, it's totally the most delightful career ever. I start that thing I'm not supposed to talk about on Monday! Exciting and mysterious.

Also, I have an HTC magic android phone now. I really wanted an iphone for ages, but I needed a new phone pretty desperately and I was tired of waiting for iphones to get cheaper and/or my student finance stuff to get sorted out. I'm really happy with it though, my yearning for the iphone was mostly just brand loyalty really, the android platform does pretty much everything I would use the iphone for and according to my research it's better in some ways. I am a little afraid of becoming a full blown information addict with it though. I was already bad enough without permanent, portable internet access and a zillion apps to inform me of all the various goings on in the world.

Art intro no. 2

Dammit. I promised myself I would make an art post each week. I guess better late than never.
I am sick sick sick. Children, fucking disease factories the whole lot of them. Grumble grumble. Can't swallow, can't breathe,  can't really do much besides blog. So I had better make myself useful.
Here is a quick one before I pass out in a pile of my own mucus.

Internets, meet Asia Wong. She is a performance/public intervention artist currently living in New Orleans. Possibly? Probably still? I actually don't know much about her.

I could blog about that website I just linked to and it's contents for miles but I wont cuz I am sick and lazy. I will make you discover is for yourself. It is super fun anyway.

I really enjoy her "Wreckless" project. I think it is one we can all relate to. Here is a quote from her project description regarding "Wreckless".

" In Zooey, by J. D. Salinger, there is a moment when Franny is at home on the sofa having a nervous breakdown, wearing her robe and petting the family cat and Zooey says to her, “I mean if you're able to go into a collapse with all your might, why can't you use the same energy to stay well and busy?” He takes it back in the next breath, says, “All right, so I'm being unreasonable,” but I’ve always thought that was a perfectly reasonable thing to say.
A lot of my friends are battling depression. This depression is entirely logical. There is a lot to be depressed about: the privatization of our public spaces; the disappearance of imagination from everyday life; the almost instantaneous co-optation of the subversive into mainstream consumer society. Not to mention global warming, the depletion of our natural resources, and impending world war.
     What is there to do?
Wreckless is about reclaiming public space, about using your imagination, and about recontextualizing the tools of commodification into expressions of individuality.
And Wreckless aims to do this all with a measure of joy.
Because in a culture where advertising is meant to keep you perpetually dissatisfied, bored, and ugly (i.e., the perfect consumer), being happy, imaginative and beautiful is a revolutionary act.
      Wreckless.

I believe she is most well known for her 300 Letters project. This project is her extremely random way of creating intimacy among strangers. She penned 300 love letters to people she knew or kind of knew or wanted to know, attached them to the OUTSIDE of envelopes and addressed them to strangers. She then made this highly amusing and synesthetic website for them. Go ahead, browse for days, it is incredibly satisfying in a voyeuristic kind of way.

This is the love letter that she wrote to herself.

Throughout the ages, people have debated over what the three most beautiful words in the English language are. Well my darlings, the results are in. It's not "I love you." It's not even, as I previously thought "You were right." Turns out that the prettiest, most wonderful words ever spoken are:

IT'S NOT CANCER.

Take note, future poets.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.
